The Ultimate Aurora Hunt

Learn the science and tricks to real northern lights hunting with an astrophysicist.

Who wants to get on a big bus with 50 strangers and go to a parking lot only 20 minutes outside the city? Not us!


You will team up with one of our science guides who has been hunting aurora for a decade, and go on a tailor-made road trip just for you to find the best place to look for lights. Branded big bus tours are only allowed to go within 45-60 minute radius of the city center. But not this tour, if you are up for it! 


Our tour starts with a sit-down meet-up, where we discuss the location options and what the terrestrial and solar forecasts are telling us. We will then decide on a go/no-go for the tour. If we decide no-go, we can sit longer and discuss future forecasts for the rest of your trip and other scientific tidbits we would cover on the road. If the tour is a no-go, you will be refunded all but 5.000 ISK, and you will get added to the secret aurora forecast Instagram group to help you plan your viewing plans for the rest of your trip. (We always recommend booking a tour earlier in your trip, so you have time to either re-book or use the information we give you to your advantage.)


If the trip is a-go, we will head out at the best time possible for viewing. Please be flexible! Sometimes this will be earlier in the evening, sometimes this will be later. We will work together to find a plan that fits your needs and schedule with what the forecasts are telling us. We will then set out on a road trip to places no big bus will take you, and will hopefully have a whole area to yourself as we scout for lights. Northern lights hunting can be chaotic and spontaneous. Sometimes, we will be driving and we will need to pull over to catch an unexpected substorm. We will also share some hot drinks, photos, learn a lot, and of course, have some fun.


Please note: this is an actual hunt experience. We start indoors planning the hunt and learning the science and seeing the data. Then we agree on a time to meet and start the search. If we need to cancel the tour due to weather or you do not see lights, you will get added to our private aurora data forecast IG channel. This is the only tour like this in Iceland.

      Please note

        This is a very time-intensive and thought-intensive tour, that you help decide and build. Plan for meeting in your hotel lobby or a nearby cafe for our pre-trip prep session. This is a true northern lights hunt, unlike cookie-cutter tours, and we will work as a group to assess the forecasts and talk about the science of what is happening. If you book this tour, be prepared to have your whole evening free.

          Warm clothes. Waterproof, layered outwear. Snacks. A good attitude. A bit of spontaneity and whimsy.
